Union Musical Española
History
Ernesto Dotesio Paynter founded a music store and small publishing firm in Bilbao in the 1890s. In 1898, he purchased Casa Romero of Madrid, the largest music publisher in Spain. On March 14, 1900, the combined business, headquartered in Barcelona, was renamed Casa Dotesio. Dotesio's expansion was rapid, with the acquisition of the Spanish publishers Zozaya, Fuentes y Asensio and Casa Eslava in the first year of Casa Dotesio's operation. Dotesio continued to acquire additional Spanish publishers and renamed the now vastly expanded enterprise Unión Musical Española on May 26, 1914, with the main office in Madrid. Branch offices operated in other Spanish cities, including Barcelona, Bilbao and Valencia.
Union Musical Española was the dominant Spanish publisher for many decades thereafter. In the early 1990s, it was absorbed by the Music Sales Group, which also controls G. Schirmer, Hansen/Chester/Novello, Sikorski, and numerous other imprints.

After being absorbed by the Music Sales Group, the "Unión Musical Española" was renamed "Unión Musical Ediciones S.L.". "Unión Musical Española" was founded in 1900 and controlled by the Chapa family for over 70 years. The firm has been part of the Music Sales Group since 1990. The principal works of Spain's leading composers are included in the catalogue, among them those of J. Rodrigo, Falla, Turina, Albeniz, Montsalvatge, Granados and Mompou, as well as important Zarzuelas and other theatrical works.
Unión Musical Ediciones (UME) continues to publish the works of contemporary Spanish composers such as Joan Albert Amargos, winner of the ‘Premios De La Música 2007’ for best classical composer, and Alberto Iglesias, one of the greatest modern composers of film music. His work includes Almodóvar’s Hablé Con Ella and Volver, and Marc Foster’s The Kite Runner.
In popular music they are constantly acquiring new copyrights, composers and agencies, and established recently a partnership with the famous Café del Mar, helping them to achieve numerous international hits. The Film and TV department works actively with advertising agencies, the TV industry and various new media to promote composers’ works.
